This year marks the ninth year of the National Education
Association's sponsored celebration of reading. With each year the nationwide
initiative grows. Here at Conant, we planned many enjoyable activities. During
the morning announcements, a sixth grade student introduced the day and read
a poem expressing the feeling many people have about Dr. Seuss. Everyone was
invited to sing Dr. Seuss We Love You, led by some of the second graders over
the intercom. Later in the morning, first grade students feasted on "green
eggs and ham"!
This year we are also celebrated the work of author/illustrator Jan Brett on
"Read Across America Day". All students were invited to illustrate
a favorite scene or character from one of her books. Illustrations were displayed
in the main hallway, and everyone who participated was entered in a drawing
to win a free Jan Brett book! One winner per grade level was drawn by "Hedgie"
and his friends (a.k.a. student council members), at our all school meeting.
